Essence of a Tabla Master – The Journey of Sarang Bhandare

In the vast universe of Indian classical music, rhythm forms the heartbeat that sustains melody. Among the custodians of this rhythmic tradition, few artists shine with the devotion and discipline that define a true tabla master. Shri Sarang Bhandare is one such emerging virtuoso, a name that resonates with promise, passion, and perseverance. His journey is not merely about learning an instrument; it is about living the essence of a timeless tradition – the Banaras Tabla Gharana.

The Banaras Gharana Legacy

To understand Sarang’s artistry, one must first appreciate the profound heritage he represents. The Banaras Gharana, also known as the Purab Gharana, traces its origins to the holy city of Varanasi in the 18th century, established by the legendary Pandit Ram Sahai. This gharana is celebrated for its open-handed playing technique, resonant sound, and compositions that blend rhythmic grandeur with melodic grace. Its repertoire is vast, featuring majestic peshkars, intricate relas, lyrical tukras, and thunderous chakradars.

What makes this gharana truly special is its spiritual depth. Each stroke is an offering, every composition a meditative chant, weaving sound into devotion. Artists of this lineage, including Pandit Kishan Maharaj and Pandit Samta Prasad, have elevated tabla to an art form of infinite beauty. Today, this tradition thrives through torchbearers like Pandit Arvind Kumar Azad, who continue to preserve and propagate its glory.

The Guiding Light – Guru-Shishya Parampara

Sarang’s musical journey is rooted in the sacred guru-shishya parampara (teacher-disciple tradition), which remains the soul of Indian classical music. Under the rigorous training and nurturing of Pandit Arvind Kumar Azad, a direct disciple of the legendary Pandit Kishan Maharaj, Sarang has imbibed not only technical mastery but also the spiritual essence of rhythm.

From the very first lesson, Sarang embraced the discipline that tabla demands – hours of riyaz (practice), an ear for perfection, and a heart tuned to the subtle beauty of sound. His guru instilled in him a deep respect for tradition while encouraging creativity, shaping him into an artist who balances heritage with individuality.

The Artistry of Sarang Bhandare

What defines the essence of a tabla master? It is not just speed or strength; it is the ability to make rhythm speak. Sarang embodies this essence. His playing reflects:

  • Clarity of Bols – Every syllable, from ‘Dha’ to ‘Na’, rings with precision.

  • Dynamic Range – His hands breathe both thunderous power and delicate softness into the drumhead.

  • Compositional Depth – His repertoire includes traditional kaydas, relas, and chakradars, performed with finesse.

  • Emotional Expression – Beyond technique, his playing communicates joy, devotion, and energy.

Sarang’s solos are journeys in themselves – starting with an expansive peshkar that sets the mood, flowing into intricate variations, and culminating in breathtaking tihais that leave audiences spellbound. In accompaniment, he is equally sensitive, supporting vocalists, instrumentalists, and Kathak dancers with rhythmic elegance.

Performances and Contributions

Over the years, Sarang has performed in prestigious cultural festivals, intimate baithaks, and collaborative concerts, earning appreciation for his precision and artistry. His ability to adapt across genres – from classical to contemporary fusion – showcases his versatility while staying true to the Banaras ethos.

Sarang also believes in sharing knowledge. As a dedicated teacher, he imparts the fundamentals of tabla to aspiring students, emphasizing both discipline and joy in learning. Through workshops and online classes, he is introducing the beauty of Indian rhythm to a global audience, ensuring that the sound of tabla continues to resonate across generations.

Vision and Philosophy

For Sarang, tabla is not just an instrument; it is a living, breathing entity that connects the human spirit to the divine pulse of the universe. His vision goes beyond performance – he seeks to popularize Indian percussion worldwide, engaging with younger audiences through creative formats without diluting the purity of tradition.

His philosophy is simple yet profound:

“Rhythm is life. It is in our breath, our heartbeat, our steps. To play tabla is to connect with that eternal rhythm and express the inexpressible.”

A Maestro in the Making

The journey of a musician never truly ends; it evolves with every beat, every composition, and every audience. As Sarang Bhandare continues to walk the path of dedication, his artistry promises to enrich the world of rhythm, inspire countless students, and uphold the glorious heritage of the Banaras Gharana.

In him, we witness the essence of a tabla master – an artist who honors tradition, embraces innovation, and transforms rhythm into poetry.
